Designer Alan Copeland writes in detail about the latest venue – Le Cinema Plumbob – available on the Sims 3 Store on March 7th.

It seems like every town has one of those great old places to catch classics from the silver screen. You may have seen these movies dozens of times on TV, but there is just something about seeing them in that environment that really makes the experience especially memorable.

It’s particularly trendy right now for some theatres to provide more of an upscale environment, serving drinks, having loveseats to snuggle up with your date and providing a bit of VIP exclusivity. This is the type of experience we hope to emulate for your Sims with our latest venue, Le Cinema Plumbob.

This new theatre comes with a gorgeous set of related Build/Buy objects and three new Premium Content items. The first is the flashiest and most obvious one… the movie screen! At six tiles across and using every inch of height from floor to ceiling, this thing is massive. It also dims the lights automatically and has a set duration, providing some great entertainment for your Sims very quickly.

There’s a variety of movies to select, from romantic comedy, to drama, action, adventure and so on. Each one provides a ton of fun, and a buff that not only helps your Sims mood, but may also inspire them into different interactions. So for example, if you take your Sim to see a romantic movie, they might be more inclined to be more romantic for the rest of the day.

But the objects I’m really excited about are the brand new ticket machine and turnstile. This new system allows you to restrict rooms based on… well, just about anything you can imagine. The most obvious is by tickets! You can buy different colors of tickets at the ticket machine and have the locks on the turnstile to only allow Sims with that specific ticket color. Each ticket has a limited duration, so when it’s about to expire Sims are pushed to leave and will need another ticket if they want to go back in.

What’s really exciting is if your Sim owns the lot, all of the money for those ticket sales is yours! This opens up a whole new avenue of business gameplay in The Sims 3. You can build buffets, exclusive clubs, gyms, casinos or arcades… basically anything that you would want an entrance or membership fee. I’m genuinely excited about all of the different applications this can have.
You can also set locks for just about anything else you might want as well.

Tired of those pesky zombies? Set the lock to forbid all zombies or any other life-state. Want to throw a party for only the hippest elders in town? Set the lock based on age. Or gender. You get the idea.

You can even mix and match these locks for even more unique combinations. In the theatre you might have a lock that only allows YA and older with a red ticket. Or let’s say you want to throw a party that only allows teen boy vampires, you can restrict the door to only allow them in. (Please have a cheap stove and at least one vamp with a low Cooking skill.)

While I primarily wanted to focus on the different applications for the new Premium Content, the venue has some really cool areas to catch a drink after the show, with more of an art deco vibe than what we normally see in The Sims.

Wow! What an amazing set this will be. I’m so excited about the premium content – this will let us do so many things I’ve been wanting to do. I’ll finally be able to build my teen only club. :)

    • Iron Seagull says:

Oh that’s a good idea! I made a teen club in TS2 but I somehow completely forgot about it. I even used it for a media communications project in high school. Don’t remember what mark I got from it, but I remember it was pretty well received. It helped that my teacher used to play SimCity back in college. :P

  2. Alesha says:

Interesting. Maybe a business EP in the future, or is this it? Hmm… ;P

  3. Steph says:

hmmm very interesting…lovely set though i might add the barista to it

  4. Chris says:

Was this posted this late at night? Good lord

  5. Pumbaa says:

    Sweet…

  6. Conclue says:

I stand corrected! WOW Sims 3 Store team, Copeland! Whoa never saw this coming. I said “nah” and it’s versatile. I’m thinking my singer sim can buy her own venue and charge tickets to her own shows! HAHA! Wow. This is cool. The possibilities are pretty extensive too. This is the kinda gameplay I’m talkin about in the other post with the new screens. This is so cool. I’m buying this tomorrow, I have the SP’s. I didn’t care for a movie theater venue but since they did it this good, I will definitly buy it for the sole purpose of supporting THAT KINDA OF CONTENT! AWWESOME I’m actually really excited to get this tomorrow. Especially that theres new “movies” even if they are rehashed stuff clipped togther. I’m thinking the movies from Sims 2 Freetime might be the movies in this venue, which would be adorbale. LOL

That venue is beautiful too. Not only that, but the seating/decor that emulates a theater will be great for in home theaters with the projector in all honesty. Perfect those Sims that are beyond rich.

    • Tim says:

      I agree (gives virtual high-five)

    • Amy says:

Please be honest, Conclue. Are you Simguru Ryan (the over-exicted PR guy who works for EA)? Because you talk EXACTLY like him. I mean, he’d say EXACTLY what you just said. With all the inserted “this is cool” and forced “AWWESOME” remarks…

      Weird. Seriously. Really weird. 0_o

      • MItch says:

LOL!! Amy wins the internets tbh.

      • Conclue says:

Thanks for ruining my day. I was exicted that they’re bringing content like they should.

And no I’m not SimGuruRyan because then I’d be talking badly about myself on this website. He annoys the hell out of me. He sounds so fake and disinterested that’s it’s sad.

Now that you’ve said that, I’ll go put my head in the microwave.

Thanks! LOL :) Coool. Awesome. Painfully annoying! Great. Love it.

  7. CodyIsInLove says:

I wonder if the ticket system will actually work or will it end up a flop like the barrier ropes in Nightlife where due to the restriction of what sims could come in, often clubs end up being vacant even with it being a hotspot. If it works then I am in!

  8. ckpxpro says:

eh, so basically the bouncers from LN w/o the celebrity aspect. i do like how if you own the venue you can get money tho, thats pretty cool. i could make my own arcade with the new lot type from UL. maybe add some barista bars. i wish the lot type IS like a movie theater type, does anybody know?

  9. Ati says:

I mean..I love the idea but the fact that it’s the same things you see on any other TV screen and nothing new added to watch leaves me disappointed.
It would be cool if there was some way to add machinima movies simmers make to watch at the movie theatre.

    • Game Boy says:

LOL! I doubt you actually watch the TV with your Sims if you do then that is just sad.

      • CodyIsInLove says:

I would have to disagree. Most of us Simmers cross the barrier of peculiarity when playing Sims. Just like if you watched a person sleep or pee in real life that be WAY creepy but in The Sims it is acceptable. I am stamping my foot burning holes into my Sims as they urinate lol. Hurry up we got stuff to do. I also like watching T.v with my Sims. The little programs they have are neato. Like I love that with the weather channel the image loop they play is different each season which is WAY cool.

        • Game Boy says:

Well that’s just YOU then, Do you watch Sims sleep as well without speeding up things? If so you are just wasting time.

          • CodyIsInLove says:

I do watch them sleep but I do speed it up. Everything except rabbit hole activities and sleeping I keep on regular speed ;) !

          • David says:

if you don’t watch your sims as they watch these shows then the whole point of an open movie theater venue is pointless to you anyway. The fact of the matter is that it would make the experience of a movie theater exponentially better if they had added actual movies to the PC screen.

          • Game Boy says:

I get what you are saying it would be cool and stuff but for me it is not a big issue that bothers me that it would stop me from purchasing this set.

  10. miklc says:

Wow that sounds awesome!! It’s great they’re adding in business elements bit by bit!

    • Lilly says:

That’s not good… I’d prefer a whole EP, fleshed out properly and everything!

      • Amy says:

Agreed. Besides, unless all the business elements are released together in one proper expansion, the new gameplay elements aren’t going to work together properly, if at all. Especially when various pieces of new content are coming from completely different design teams that aren’t trying to work together with one common goal in mind.

        • Warner says:

well, they updated all the magic store items for supernatural… so whats to say they wouldnt upgrade items that could be used for buisnesses if/*hopefully*when they do that type of ep?

I just bought the al fresco, and now I want this… dang budgets!!!

      • miklc says:

Oh I would still love to have a Farming and a Business EP after the Future EP but for now I am happy that we are getting some business elements because it is something I have been wanting in the game for a long time. I’m hoping that they are testing the waters for a potential Business EP with these venue and the market stalls to see how well they’re perceived and how much of a demand there is for businesses in game, guess we will have to wait and see

        • Pamela** says:

That’s a good way to look at it! I’m hoping for that too. A proper business ep will make me feel like my sims 3 game is complete. But a farming ep would be nice too! :)

        • Jess1281 says:

Agreed, they could even combine Farming and Business.

  11. Aaron says:

    How many SP’s?

  12. klaus says:

    I ‘m gonna make gay club… Hahaha

  13. willowtree says:

This looks great! Finally a rabbit hole that is opened to us.
This might be the first store content actually worth it’s price.
It seems I have to buy a few Simpoints now.

  14. Tim says:

Those who have the other Art deco sets can even join the arcade with the movie theater in to one lot , since both lots are bigish the two together wouldn’t look so bad together ,I think ill make that my mission lol :D :D :D

  15. Amy says:

There’s nothing wrong with looking forward to this, but it just sounds like EA’s PR team snuck in here to lay it on THICK to hype this pack. I mean, it looks like nothing is actually “new” to the game except for using tickets. That’s fine and all, but it’s not “AMAZING”. Thus being overly-excited here seems a bit… odd.

As I’ve said before, if there are popcorn machines and new legitimate *movies* for sims to watch, I’ll happily buy this. But sadly neither seems to be the case. Seeing as it’s supposed to be a public *movie theater*, I cringe at the thought of just watching old television channels in it… all with no popcorn. :(

    • ThunderDweller says:

If this is a response to Conclue, if you looked at the SimsVIP post prior to this one, you might notice that the very same Conclue made a negative comment about how disappointed s/he was with the store, before s/he read this post about what was actually included in this set. Something about wanting OFB items.
My point is, no it isn’t all that “Odd” for somebody who made an assumption, to later be really happy that their assumption turned out to be incorrect, and to initially be a tad overenthusiastic as a reaction. In this case, the set includes some OFB items s/he really really wanted or wasn’t expecting.
Why should everyone else be unimpressed just because you are. Just because you are not amazed by rainbows (or whatever), doesn’t mean it’s impossible or even “Odd/Weird” for others to be. /metaphor
Also, the Gurus tend to use their Guru names when they comment on this site, as they have done before. Really now, PR agent? That’s like calling someone a snake in the grass, and using words like “weird” and “odd” is just a step away from saying “queer”, “gay”, and “insane”: it’s unnecessarily crude and rude. Raining on other people’s enthusiasm is just not cool. So what if other ppl want to be happy and express it? Not your business, just like it’s fine for others to express their unhappiness/unamazed-ness without receiving -personal- attacks in response.

      • n00biito says:

All I got from this post is: “I’m prolly homophobic”. Seriously “GAY”?! You’re going to use that word as an example a of a major insult?! smh

        • ThunderDweller says:

I was actually implying that Amy was the homophobe, which is why I used the word as an example of an insult. It’s in the subtext. As a queer myself, his/her phrasing really ticked me off, ’cause I’ve seen phrasing like that go in that direction way too many times. Hence “a step away”.

What I’m actually angry about, not just at Amy but in general, is how it seems that negative opinions seem to be the only valid ones. I’ve read way too many comments where ppl who are happy with content get verbally attacked and are accused of all kinds of ridiculous things.

Seriously, nobody who has anything negative to say ever gets accused of working for a rival gaming company. Why are ppl who are content/excited not allowed to be ‘real’ ppl, but ‘must’ be PR? That just seems to me to be a really weird form of racism/sexism/something-ism.

Welcome to the real world, where there are all kinds of ppl, including those who like to be happy on occasion. Happy people are people too.

          • Charlotte says:

Really? Well, welcome to the real world where people are going to have negative opinions.

            “Happy people are people too.”

Negative people are people too, and should be able to have those opinions without having personal attacks thrown at them. Calling some one a homophobe (is that not a personal attack) because they described someones post as weird?

Any other adjectives we can use with out be having our personal moralities call into question?

“… really -weird- form of racism/sexism/something-ism.”

so…by your logic thinking someone’s post is PR is a its a “queer/gay” form of racism/sexism?

Do you know what either of those really are, because judging someone to be a PR agent from their post has nothing to do with their race, or gender. But naturally its fine for you to use the word weird, even though it’s “unnecessarily crude and rude”.

You know what new rule, no one can use the world “dark” and “black” in a negative way. Black magic, dark days, I think its offensive to all my people with not so light skin. Every person who uses these terms is racist. Obviously.

          • Lilly says:

I don’t really see how what Amy said has anything to do with anyone’s race, gender or sexuality. Saying that peoples “overly excited” behaviour is a bit odd is not remotely comparable to Sexism, Racism, or homophobia. Those are serious issues, while disagreements within the Sims 3 community on what new PC is “awesome or not” is not something that would keep anyone up at night. I think implying someone is a homophobe because they suspect EA has PR Agents here is a bit of an overreaction.

          • CodyIsInLove says:

I have to agree with you Amy it is rather strange, there was a huge wave of booing and naying then all a suddenly people are glowing with excitement lol. Kind of creepy.

          • ThunderDweller says:

No, I don’t have problems with negativity. My beef is with bullying, and I have pent up anger from reading a year’s worth of it.

Speaking from a psychological standpoint, people use loaded, aggressive words when they want to modify a behavior they feel is detrimental to society or morally questionable. The loaded words are designed to sound unnaturally harsh, because they act as a warning that the person they are talking to crossed a line.

Everyone does this subconsciously. n00biito emphasized gay as a warning to stop what they perceived as homophobic comments. Charlotte broke down his/her argument into points, to emphasize her argument that I was being hypocritical. I emphasized Amy’s words by turning their loaded words into darker versions.
All of our beef pinged our own personal moral compasses.

But exactly what behavior are ppl trying to modify by using loaded words against ppl who make happy comments, here and elsewhere? Did I miss the memo that being excited is a social faux pas?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, good or bad. But singling someone out and using harsh words to stop an opinion crosses the boundary of opinion into something closer to bullying. In this case, I got fed up with continually reading ppl ganging up on ppl who are finding positive aspects to be happy about.

On topic of post: I love Art Deco, and the premium content was a pleasant surprise. But like Amy, I wouldn’t say ‘awesome’. I happen to like my money more, so I probably won’t buy => opinion.
But trying to Silence those who have a difference of opinion in the positive, is wrong. Nobody’s opinions should be silenced. I just snapped yesterday, and got all defensive over content I’m ‘meh’ about.
Since English isn’t my first language, it’s possible I phrased it confusingly. #SecondLanguageProblems

      • Montona says:

        ^this^

I do not understand what is “weird” or “odd” about someone being enthusiastic about something; whether you think that enthusiasm is over the top or not.

Also if you look at other posts Conclue has commented on, I think you will find his/her comments are a mixed bag—some good, some bad; probably more bad than good.

        • Game Boy says:

I agree Seems like some people here can’t understand the fact that someone can find something amazing that they don’t.

We have different Likes/Dislikes, Tastes, Turn On’s/Turn Off’s, Different Opinions.

          IT’S WHAT MAKES EVERYONE DIFFERENT.

      • Conclue says:

Thank you! I had talked negatively about this set since the first picture was released. Why? Because I figured it was a big TV Screen (check) and a popcorn maker and a bunch of staged interactions, as they usually are. I’m actually very critical on both SimsVIP and Sims3 forums (in the Guru’s own threads) about whack content that they release. If you read my previous post in the previous blog entry on this venue you’d see that I said the only way this would be worth it is if they made it so it actually functioned like a movie theater. I reacted that way because the ticket machine entry system provides gameplay that can be used OUTSIDE of this venue. I’m about to purchase this right now. Not because it’s a “fake movie theater” but because what I can do as a Simmer with the items released.

I didn’t buy the market street venue. It’s garbage.

The progidy day care is also garbabge. I don’t need a venue to take my toddlers to, only to do what I do at home. If that venue acted like a daycare where I could drop them off then that’s cool.

It was the ticket machine/entry system that has got me interested in this set and the little marquee that hangs outside the venue over the door and the “theater” objects. Why? Because I plan on making this a Private venue for Showtime. Casinos will now have a fee to get in in all my worlds. That’s why I reacted that way because the PC items give us limitless gameplay. Not that crap lemonade stand that can only be used by kids. Or that stupid restuarant where my Sims have to go out to eat and cook on top of it. STUPID.

Wait? I complained about all these things in the previous post. Like I said. Thanks n00bitio for clearly stating the obvious. SMH.

        • Conclue says:

I wanted to add the reason I’m excited is because the team is taking steps in the right direction at least with these half steppin’ venues. At least with this set they made PC that is expandable and can be used everywhere and that’s the joy in seeing they even did that. They could have made just a “buy movie ticket” booth and you could get popcorn and candy at it as well and call it a day. I wouldn’t have gotten it.

At the end of the day I’m not even using this venue as a movie theater because I’m not taking my Sims out to a movie to watch them watch TV on a community lot. It’s silly. We have rabbit holes for movies and I’m conent with that. However, this is a perfect venue for ST/Casino objects… and thats why I’m buying it.

As a movie theater? It’s a fail. No Movies, No Popcorn machine and a recolored bar? Really? C’mon. I’m not a fan of the product, I’m a fan of the PC items that they created.

          Can’t believe some people, lol

        • shamanta says:

A daycare centre would be cool the babysitters can be annoying.

    • Vitani says:

I totally agree! It also looks like there aren’t many new animations with these premium objects, aside from interacting with the ticket machine. Very disappointing. I might as well just stick with the mod version of this.

      • Process Denied says:

I like the fact that the screen will dim the lights when it comes on and turn the lights up when it is through. The movies will also prompt appropriate behavior for the movie ie: romantic movies will inspire the sims to be romantic. I think it does add a lot.

  16. Aaron says:

    Hope it’s less than 2,300SP

  17. Rae-La says:

You know.. i’m pleasantly surprised. At first i thought, “Oh hey look here’s an over sized tv. Mmmkay moving on.” But now that i’m actually looking at this i’m a little excited..

1 the actual design of the lot looks.. really gorgeous. It hits my taste buds.
2 i’m real caught off guard by this ticket system. i know i shouldn’t get my hopes up, but i can’t help but think of the possibilities :3

i just hope they haven’t really stuck to the tv clips :/ i love listening to the sounds of the cinema when my sims visit. Try it sometime :3

Hahah not like we can’t just mod in new movies though, right?

  18. catloverplayer says:

I’m hoping this will work with unplayable Sims your Sims are dating. Hope they added an ask to watch movie together.

    • Game Boy says:

You are always interested in Dating stuff in Sims 3 LOL!

Not saying there is anything wrong with that but just saying…

  19. lataya says:

omg this is a must have to replace the movies rabbits holes. man I hate being broke buy u know that 4 kids for u.

  20. Vitani says:

Seriously guys? Inge already make a mod like this. I don’t think it’s been updated in a while or maybe it doesn’t need updates, but yeah, I’m not forking over cash for this. The venue itself looks nice, but other than yet, no thanks. Hope you all enjoy it though :)

    • Pamela** says:

There’s a ticket stall mod? I don’t really use mods (except for that no zombie one and the one that unlocks sim port items) because in the past I’ve used them and they messed up my game. I think this is good for people who don’t like to use mods.

      • Vitani says:

Yip, over at simlogical. I don’t know if it’s compatible with 1.50 but I’ve been using with 1.48 with no problems.

      • Vitani says:

I agree the store version is good for people who don’t like using mods but I think for the price, it’s just better to just stick with a mod that offers similar functionality.

        • Pamela** says:

O wow, ok. I’m always nervous about using mods, but you’re right, the price for these items is usually pretty ridiculous.

          • CodyIsInLove says:

Pamela do not be scared of Mods :) ! I find a very important thing to do is research the mod before downloading it then once you have concluded you wanted it write the date downloaded, the location, and the name of the mod down. Then when the next expansion comes out remove them until you can check that they are all compatible using the list you have. One of my favorite mods released is the floor and wall hider by I believe Huge Lunatic that removes all the redundant wallpapers and floors making the catalogue MUCH EASIER TO PERUSE since many of the wallpapers/floors are just recolors. GO CHECK IT OUT!

          • Julie says:

What CodyIsInLove said, and I’d personally suggest that you download them from a site like Modthesims, which is selective about what they put up and it’s simpler for me getting most mods from one source. I’ve never had any problems with mods from that site. :)

    • Laura says:

Inge’s mod is great. But the owner has to be on the lot for the mod to work. If you switch families, the ticket item no longer works. According to the information we have, the EA ticket booth will allow the owner to get money, which probably means he does not have to be on the lot and you do not have to be playing his family. I see this as an improvement. You will be able to play another family and visit the venue lot.

  21. Pamela** says:

I think this looks really interesting. I’m debating buying it, mainly because I just recently spent over $100 on simcity and university. But I like the idea of the turnstile and can think of many cool community lots to use it with. Though I was hoping for a popcorn machine and a candy register! It would really make good use of that katy perry candy decor stuff if I could make a real candy store in my game! But this is definitly a good idea for a premium content!

  22. Max Q Baker says:

I’m going to be negative for a minute (even though I am tentatively looking forward to this set).

    My concern is the price.

It is listed as having ‘three’ pieces of premium content.

1.) A larger tv screen with the same old Sims2 video clips, which – on a scale of 1 – 10 (where 5 = “meh”), is about a 6 – and that bump off of 5 is only because it has auto-dimming features.

2.) A ticket machine. Does this have any functionality on its own? Or does it ONLY have context in conjunction with the Turnstile? If it ONLY works with the turnstile, then it’s really not a piece of premium content; it’s just an accessory to the turnstile. (like when you buy a doorknob at the store, you get the key with it. It’s not a special bonus you’re getting, it’s a required match to that set.)

3.) The Turnstile. Does it ALWAYS have the red ropes around it? Remember how in Sims 2 you had the option of just dropping the little ticket device anywhere on your lot. And Sims had to go to it to and pay to gain access. That was versatile. If this is FORCED to have the red ropes like VIP sections, then it limits where and how you can use it. (That was a big disappointment about the Greenhouse premium content. Nice idea, but zero versatility with the included features.)

It would be nice to be able to link the standalone machine (without red velvet ropes etc.) to a door, a lot, a room, etc.

    In conclusion:
If the set is reasonably priced (which is a ‘personal taste’ type of decision), then I don’t care about the above because they are nice features to add to the game; but if it is priced like it is God’s Gift to the Simming Community, then I will be disappointed in the failure to make the content more universal (if it turns out that it is not.)

  23. SimsVIP says:

FYI: I am currently changing internet phone and cable in my house, so until he’s done I wont be posting any articles (like the release of this). I will have a post done afterwards with all the info though :)

  24. Arletta says:

Not that it’s exactly relevant (I’ll make a relevant comment shortly) but every time I come on here, my brain skim reads the title then bursts into song “Saturday night at the movies…….”.

Relevant comment: I’m unsure about this. It sounds good but…. Perhaps it’s just not for me.

  25. Charlie says:

I’ll just appreciate someone uploading the the lot. I know I will only get the shell but I will decorate it myself with other store items I already bought like the sports them stuff that came with a big screen tv and chairs with cup holders.
