I love his blog. I feel like sometimes designers create problems where there really aren’t any, then go on to “fix” those “problems”–and thereby remove a big part of the fun of the original. I’ve staffed some online games where this happened and it’s so crazy-making to witness.

The biggest “problems” coders are trying to “fix” nowadays: DRM and forced multiplayer. I’m sitting out on SimCity because I really object to Origin and don’t want to play an MMO. I skipped Anno 2070 even though I’m a 1404 freak because of its DRM. Their designers’ strategy of condescendingly telling me over and over again that I’ll just love having my privacy violated doesn’t work. I want to play the game *my* way, not *their* way. Simport gets it right: if I *want* to play with other people I can. Otherwise it’s totally, utterly optional. As my recent Launcher woes have shown, I don’t even need to be logged in to play the game.

Basically, TS3 steered right past most of the “problems.” That’s why I still play it 2 years later, and why I’ll still be playing it if TS4 “fixes” that annoying single-player “problem” I’m having.

PS: I hadn’t even noticed the “skip” feature, but that just means the TS3 coders did it right.
