There I found 2 files with secuROM in the name. I put them in the pc waste-paper basket and deleted them.
And so I do every time I play before going online.

Origin, on the other hand, only really manages the “stable” part of that: it doesn’t have much in the way of features, and EA’s notoriously reluctant to “devalue their IP” with sales. If it wasn’t for EA making most of their games exclusive to Origin, I don’t know that it’d ever be worth anyone’s time to buy anything on it. It’s basically a company store, and not much else.

There ARE still people out there who hate the hell out of Steam, though. Some of them are still angry about how unstable it was when it first came out (even if it’s improved a lot since then). More are just strongly anti-DRM (an understandable position). Then there’s the argument that Steam’s pre-eminence is harmful in other ways (encouraging people to wait for sales instead of buying games at full retail price, or preventing other online storefronts from getting business because customers “would rather buy it on Steam”). Probably there are also some people who have poor internet service and see the shift to digital distribution as something that will effectively drive them out of gaming (even things you can still buy on disk will eventually require you to download a few gigabytes’ worth of updates and expansion).

Further evidence that everything has a hidden price, I guess. Nothing’s ever gonna be perfect.

It’s a pain to remove it again, but that’s about it. It’s spying capabilities are limited and already exceeded by quite a few programmes people install on a daily basis.
The biggest part of the controversy was the fact that it used to destroy a lot of people’s disc drives and still some developers continued using it. One of them being EA. But the UC does not use the version of SecuROM that destroyed these disc drives, so even if you don’t remove it, you should be fine.

That’s a shame, I was hoping this version of free of it. Maybe they’ll see this and patch it out before they start selling it.

While I don’t like that this is still a thing, it’s not really harmful, at least not the version they used. It’s not like the older version which had the capability to be destructive. My biggest problem with it is that it sinks it’s claws deep into your computer and it’s a pain to get rid of all of it. It’s like those stupid adware and crapware toolbars such as Ask, Babylon and Conduit that just won’t go away without the use of third-party programs. Last I heard even the uninstaller Sony provides doesn’t get rid of it completely.

Also: seriously EA (and every other dev/publisher out there), Steam and Origin are DRM you don’t need to use more DRM. It’s like Ubisoft and their need to use Uplay even if you buy the game through Steam or Origin…well, not quite that bad but still.

On a side-note, I’m glad to see Reclaim Your Game being referenced. They’ve been around a long time, very informative. Though, why are people still hating on Origin? Steam is no better and people don’t mind using that.
