I have a love-hate relationship with DA:I. There’s a lot about it that I like–great cast (I especially love Alix Wilton Regan as the Inquisitor), I love how in-depth your origin affects dialogue, and it has the best dragons I’ve encountered in a game. But the gameplay is abominable (mages were completely ruined), the world is absolutely empty (it seems to be built on a “punish the completionist” mentality), the story falters a lot, and overall it continues to press forward with the postmodern tone set by DA2. Is it better than DA2? Hmm, maybe (though I will say: DA2’s story was a trainwreck, but it was at least fun to play). Honestly, BioWare has been declining for years. DA:O was good but had problems; same with ME3. DA2 was bad. DA:I is borderline unplayable. I’d call Jade Empire their last great game without qualification. (I love the original Mass Effect, but those Mako missions get old. ME2 is great, but the entire storyline feels tangential in the scheme of the trilogy.) So I suppose you could say it’s the general trend of BW’s games over the last ten years that have made me lose confidence, and DA:I was just the last straw.

Funnily enough, DA:I restored my faith in Bioware after that lacklustre DAII.

Yeah. This is arguably the best modern Bioware RPG or even one of the best games ever made.

After Dragon Age: Inquisition, I have no confidence in BioWare’s ability to produce decent games, but I do hope Mass Effect: Andromeda turns out all right. Unfortunately, most of the previews I’ve watched have a serious DA:I vibe (it doesn’t help that it uses the same engine). 🙁
