I’ve had fun building cities, watching them grow, and trying to keep everyone happy. Even in the base game, you still have to pay attention to things like education level, crime, chances of fire, health, all covered by specific types of buildings, as well as things like not just pollution but also noise pollution (which especially builds up on busy roads, but you can help reduce it with things like noise barrier highways or tree-lined roads). It can be tricky to figure it all out at first, so your first city might not go as well as you’d like in the long run, but you’ll learn valuable lessons from that which will help as you build future cities.
