I do not use mods so I never used any of those things to keep the game moving speedily. With Sims 4, the game has played super smooth and fluidly, aside from occasional update bugs that have slowed things down at times.

I have always rotated my play between numerous families. For those that solely stick to just a family or two, I can see how sims 4 could get boring after a while. The story progression definitely limits options for continuous family play. But, with my style of play, by the time I have rotated through 30 or so households, new gameplay is being released by the team, so I am good to go.
