My mumsy will love to hear that.

While the US one was always about mothers as far as I know (and seems like to be the most widespread in the world), the UK’s started off as a day when people would visit their “mother” church and it evolved from there.

Now, my home country, Hungary, and Serbia, Spain, plus a couple more have it on the first Sunday instead. It is related to honoring Virgin Mary during May.

I think French and Sweden celebrate it on the last Sunday of May, the 10th in (most?) Latin American countries and it’s definitely the 26th for Poland, but I don’t know what is the story behind these.

I always thought of Mother’s Day as one of those manufactured holidays putting 19th century sentimentality to work powering 20th century factory capitalism.
That makes the date variance very odd, one would think they’d have had their act together better. I’m sensing there’s a story behind that.

We celebrated Mother’s day on the 5th (first sunday). I had no idea people in the US celebrate it on the 12th (2nd sunday). You learn something new every day…

Anyways, happy Mother’s day!
