Tutorial: Using the Resize Cheat in The Sims 4

Decorative items are going to work much better with this cheat than any other objects. Paintings, wall decorations, rugs, curtains, indoor (and outdoor) plants, sculptures, and even lamps are all great bets if you want to size something up or down with no adverse effects. Although you may run into some issues will individual items, for the most part, these objects are ideal targets for your creativity.

As a general rule, anything your Sims physically interact with will not work properly when sized up or down. Resizing objects like toilets, showers, beds or sofas will cause some strange glitches and weird visuals. If you’re not sure whether or not a resized item is functional, be sure to playtest before you make it a permanent aspect of your build.

Windows, doors and mirrors will also glitch out if you try to size them up or down.

Of course, if you do not intend to actually use the items you have resized then many more options become open to you. As furniture tends not to glitch visually, it normally works perfectly well as a purely decorative object. For example, it could be fun to try and create a doll’s house using scaled down versions of some of the game’s items!
 

To begin resizing objects you do not need to enter anything into the cheat bar. All you need to do is select the object, hold down Shift, and press the Right or Left Square Bracket Key. Press the Right Square Bracket Key [ to size up an object and the Left Square Bracket Key ] to size down an object. You can press the keys multiple times to continue to shrink or enlarge an object. There is no limit to the amount of times you can enlarge an object, but you will only be able to shrink an object a set number of times.

A side effect of this cheat is that enlarged objects will be able to be placed slightly outside of your lot. This should not cause any major issues in your game but is something to be aware of.
 

The resizing cheat can help you create some interesting and unique builds. Being able to change the size of objects is such a useful tool for any style of build and can help breathe some new life into those old and forgotten Buy Mode items. Here are a few ideas for you to try your hand at:
 

Clutter 

Resizing clutter items will almost always look effective. As these items are purely decorative you do not need to worry about glitching and can let your creativity run wild.

Shrinking objects like statues, plants and even lamps can give you so many more options for filling up all of that empty space on your Sims’ shelves, desks and side tables.

In the above image, both the chess piece lamp and ballerina statue have been sized down. In the image below, both potted plants have been also been shrunk.

Enlarged objects work in a similar way. Larger objects will fill up a larger space and so can be a great tool if you struggle with making a room look fully decorated.

In the image above the scaled up lamp becomes the room’s focal point!
 

Rugs

Being able to resize rugs is a hugely useful tool for building. This cheat more than quadruples the number of rugs you have available in your game and can be a real life-saver in those moments of furnishing-related stress.

Some of the rugs in The Sims 4 are enormous and much too big for your average build. This cheat allows you to use these rug styles in smaller builds, providing your more average-sized houses with new decorating options.

The rug on the left is size the rug is when you first pull it out of the catalogue. The rug on the right is the size used in the image below.

One thing to be aware of is that the price of the items will not change depending on the size. Although you may have placed a rug down at half its usual size, it will not cost half its usual price. Of course, this will also work the other way around. If you’re on a strict budget, there’s nothing stopping you from sizing up a $50 bath mat and using it to fill your entire living room! You can see an example of this in the image below.

Paintings and Wall Decorations

Resizing paintings and wall-decorations is an easy way to make a blank wall look exciting without breaking the bank.

Sizing up a small (and cheap) canvas can be a great tool for starter homes. It can help make your build look stylish and well decorated without having to resort to motherlode.

A lot of the game’s old-fashioned style paintings tend to be larger because they carry a heftier price tag. By using this cheat, you can achieve that same antique aesthetic but make it fit better into a smaller room, or a specific space. In the image below, you can see this effect in practice.

Toy Cars

Sizing up toy cars is a great way to add realism to your game. Although we don’t have any playable cars in The Sims 4, by sizing up a toy car and adding it to your driveway you create a great effect.

Landscaping

The resizing cheat doesn’t only have to be used inside your houses. Shrinking plants and shrubbery is a great way to add a little more detail to your Sims’ backyards. If you vary the size of the plants in your garden, you can add some layers to your landscapes, and give your outdoor spaces a little more texture.

Enlarging rocks is also a great way to use this cheat. Adding larger rocks to the space around your build can give the impression of sloping and slanting terrain, providing a bit of depth to the perfectly flat lots of The Sims 4.

By surrounding a natural pool with rocks of different sizes you create something that closely resembles a pond or a lake.

Larger rocks can also be used to give the impression that your lot is suspended on top of a mountain or cliff. This is a really effective way to play with the tools in the game and with just a little bit of trial and error can look really impressive.
