Grant Rodiek took to Twitter to answer questions from fans, and he has confirmed that Pets in The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs Expansion Pack are not controllable. He also confirmed that a Pets Demo will not be released, and that the customization tool was built for Pets.
We are not making Create a Style for Sims. The color wheel you see has been created exclusively for TS4 Cats & Dogs create a pet feature.

Brindleton Bay 🙂
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
Pets will not be playable. (There also will be no cheat to make them playable)
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
they will still take up a slot as a member of your family.
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
Yep
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
the team wanted cats and dogs to be more realistic and spontaneous. Controlling them would void that.
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
the focus for it was to have deeper relationships, customization, a new vet business, and personalities for your cat/dog.
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
There will be foxes 😉
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
YEP!
— Drake (@SimGuruDrake) August 21, 2017
Define playable.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
No. In order to make them spontaneous, lifelike, and special, you cannot control them. Like The Sims 2.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We debated that one thing forever. Like, months.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
I feel 1000% we made the right decision.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We studied and debated and discussed and analyzed. Months and months.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We built the technology from the ground up to be the most powerful pet painting tool.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Create a Pet will not be released as a patch. But there is great stuff in the Cats & Dogs patch.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Right now we are focused on the base game. Stay tuned for more info.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
It is maybe the single most important improvement over The Sims 3.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
It is maybe the single most important improvement over The Sims 3.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We wanted to make the pets more special and lifelike. This is very important to the fun and joy of the game.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
If you control them, they can't be wondrous, spontaneous creatures with souls. By removing control, we give them life. I promise!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
No
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
But almost identically call them to any Sim.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
It's so much better than TS2. You are in for a treat.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Different creatures different rules. We didn't do this lightly. I promise it is great.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Preset
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We went super deep on cats and dogs to make them amazing. I can't wait for you to play it.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
They interface with the system so you can manage them.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
It isn't that simple. Hard to go into details in Twitter.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We designed it explicitly to tell stories.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Uh, sorta. Tough to get into on Twitter.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Strays exist.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
It isn't simple. It is sorta one way or the other.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
You can see what you need to see 😊.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Strays exist.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Not the reason 😊. It was a design decision.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
I don't want to answer as I don't want to be wrong, but I believe there are waterfront properties. Not boat houses.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
You can always sell everything in every pack.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
No.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We focused on the Vet, which is amazing new business!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
You can direct them to breed, and other interactions. They aren't feral beasts 😊.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Uh, it'll be a while. Still fixing a lot of bugs and polishing things.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Think of it like this: how do you control your dog in real life?
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Not really like Sims. No.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
You have so many options. It is a huge variety.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Not only are there puppies and kittens, you can modify them in CAP.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
👍
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
You will know what you need to know for your pets.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Big and small dogs.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We built the color system for the ground up for Create a Pet to make it as amazing as possible. It is 100% cat and dog focused!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
They can be trained. You can control them like you would control a dog in real life 😊.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Super diverse! Huge huge focus for the design.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Depends on the dog/cat/double or single but generally it is pretty dang cool.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Household cap remains the same. 1 pet = 1 sim.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Don't make assumptions about how the game works! You will know what you need to know. You assume the worst. 😊
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
We have large dogs and small dogs. We have to sorta make some abstractions at both extremes.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
I believe we have them. I THINK. They just don't have enormous skeletons.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Always new music.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Imagine owned restaurants, but your Sims can be the Vet and do the surgery.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
You buy and design the lot, hire and train staff, gain rewards, perform surgery, save doggos!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
It isn't so they are more realistic. It is so they are surprising, delightful, and more like pets!
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
💀
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
You take them when they are ill.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 21, 2017
Yes
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
How do you know when your dog or cat is sick in real life?
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
They take a slot. You guys are making very weird assumptions with "not playable." You just can't select them and do "go here."
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
Eight Sims/Pets per household.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
Okay Sims folks, I want my personal Twitter feed back. No more questions, sorry.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
No plans for pets inside the laundry machines 😉They will be another appliance that your cat can jump on or walk across though.
— Graham Nardone (@SimGuruGraham) August 22, 2017
Oh dude come on. Yes. There are ghost pets.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
There is breeding. You give them away. No selling.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
Yes yes.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
You direct them as the owner.
— Grant Rodiek (@HyperboleGrant) August 22, 2017
