The Sims 3 Collectibles Guide
This article contains information and pictures of each collectible, as soon as I find them. It is devoted to covering gems, metals, plants, fish, insects, seashells, and even those annoying gnomes that like to wake sims up with a blaring stereo at 3 AM. And, of course, the new collectibles from Into the Future as soon as it is released. Included will be my method of obtaining, unless it’s a gnome and I cheated to get it, and other known methods.

Tools of the Trade
Basic Information
One of the things I have found massively easier about collecting is if you obtain the necessary tools to let you know where the collectibles are, or better yet bring the collectibles to you. Each of these items is something I have found helpful or at some time used, though this list is probably not complete; after all, there’s such of a variety of items that help you out with finding collectibles that it can be troublesome to remember them all rather than just sticking with your favorites.
I will, as time goes on, add more items to this list as I’m reminded of them or I stumble across them. A list of items to add will be maintained at the bottom of this section.
————————————————————————————————————————————-
Life States
There are certain life states which help a lot with collectibles. These life states are added on as I come across them, though as one can expect they are quite rare. Especially since most life states have absolutely nothing to do with collecting and offer absolutely nothing for it.
There are also certain life states that could qualify, but were left out:
♦ The plantsim was left out due to the fact that, while they are a great gardener, they are just that: A gardener and nothing more. The fae, on the other hand, have the bloom ability, which allows them to quickly be able to harvest plants that are not already harvest-ready.
♦ The witch is left out because my artist friend is making a witch for me. She cringes at my sense of fashion. So, once that is ready, I will add witches!
Advantages: Fairies are natural gardeners, having the green thumb trait. In addition, at higher fairy magic levels, they have the Bloom ability, which can allow them to quickly make a plant harvest-ready. This makes them rather invaluable for collecting plants in the wild, as they are not stuck waiting for a plant to fully mature like other sims are.
Recommendation: If you are going to collect plants from the wild, use this life state.
Advantages: Their primary advantage is the ability to summon meteors. Aside from the comedy value this has for tormenting anyone who dares to give you an Evil Mr. Gnome or tries to rob your house, this ability makes collecting meteors massively easier. Just head to an empty lot and summon a meteor, then collect all of the space rocks left lying around. They can also transmute objects to make them more valuable, but I have never really found that worth the effort.
Recommendation: If you want to collect space rocks very rapidly, grab this life state.

Objects
Acquiring: The Group Science Project, or Science Tower Thingy as I like to call it, is automatically put in your family inventory when a sim hits level 10 in the Science skill. As far as I can tell, there is no other way to get it.
How it helps: If you light the power bars at the top of the tower with a semi-even mix of the three colors, it will cause gems, metals, space rocks, and the occasional University gnome to rain from the sky in bubbles and cover the lot you are on. The can result in quite the collecting frenzy for you and a possible visit by aliens, so use it wisely.
Recommendation: Get this machine as soon as you can. It can save you from having to edit town to place metal spawners all over the town or having to use a mod like Traveler to head to another town to collect metals.
Note: The power bars on the top of the tower have eight slots for powering up. As such, I recommend a pattern of 3 blue, then 2 red, then 3 green. This pattern can vary a bit, but green should always be last. The reason why green should always be last is due to the fact its power-up sequence has the section with the power bars moving, which can make it difficult to keep an accurate count of how far you’ve charged it.
Acquiring: This invention can be discovered at level 4 or later of the Inventing skill. Alternatively, it can occasionally be bought from a consignment shop or can be bought from Buydebug.
How it helps: This item can quickly collect a number of collectibles within a short range of a sim.
Recommendation: This can be useful if a sim is near the end of a vacation or after using the Science Tower Thingy, but don’t expect to use it much. It makes a nice decoration for a science lair, though.
Acquiring: This object can be found by traveling to China and checking the general store there. Alternatively, it can be found in Buydebug. Buydebug tends to be easier for your building needs.
How it helps: This allows you to collect every gem in the game, saving you from having to place gem spawners all over the neighborhood. Plus, finding gems with this tends to be faster than hunting all over the neighborhood, even with the help of the Collection Helper, and it does not require any travel.
Recommendation: Make every effort to get this. While the Science Tower Thingy can also spawn gems, this one does so reliably, often, and with less effort during the actual spawning.
Note: Unlike the Science Tower Thingy, this one requires more up-front effort to be fully utilized. You have to break space rocks to get gems to spawn, which requires a high-level Martial Arts skill. But even getting space rocks to spawn gems when broken requires completing a Martial Arts challenge (break 150 Oak-or-higher level boards). And even then, your sim will get fatigued unless you complete the relevant challenges in Athletics.
Acquiring: This invention can be discovered at level 7 or higher of the Inventing skill. Or it can be found in Buydebug.
How it helps: Aside from annoying a neighbor who gave you an Evil Mr. Gnome or tried to rob your house by trashing his lawn and preventing him from sleeping, the miner can dig up metals and gems while it is busy drilling into the ground. It can also occasionally open up an adventure tunnel, which can be used to get any type of collectible and is one of two non-cheating methods to get the caveman gnome.
Recommendation: Make at least some effort to obtain this if you are not going to cheat to obtain gnomes.
Acquiring: This is bought in the Sims 3 Store, and from there is found within the plumbing area of Buy mode.
How it helps: It allows you to easily identify seeds, helps you grow plants rapidly and rapidly fertilize them and thus seriously cuts down the time needed to garden, and it also generates seeds that range from common to special in type.
Recommendation: Make every effort to obtain this. It helps a lot with gardening, and the seed generation and identification are both invaluable.
Acquiring: This is bought in the Sims 3 Store, and from there is found within the plumbing area of Buy mode.
How it helps: Once upgraded with the Teleport Anywhere modification, it allows you to teleport directly to a collectible and saves on travel time.
Recommendation: Get this or the Galaxa Space Car (also pictured). They both serve similar functions, and both come with downsides; with this, you have to teleport home before teleporting to the next collectible, and every teleport risks breaking the device.
Acquiring: You can either befriend an alien and invite them to move in or purchase this from Buydebug.
How it helps: This teleports you to the street location closest to the collectible you are after.
Recommendation: Get this or he Not So Routine Machine (also pictured). They both serve similar functions, and both come with downsides; with this, you have to teleport to and from locations on the street, which can mean an extended travel time if the object you are after is far away from the edge of the street.
Acquiring: All four of these are found in the Plants section of Buy mode. Three of these come with the The Sims 3: Supernatural, while the fourth comes with the Stones Throw Greenhouse venue in the Sims 3 Store. Note the Greenhouse one is just a reskin of one of the Supernatural planters, which is why only three are pictured.
How it helps: If you don’t feel like building a tiny greenhouse outside, or don’t have room for one, these one-square planters allow you to grow crops inside the house.
Recommendation: Obtain a few of these if an outside greenhouse is not an option. Unless you lack Seasons, in which case these will not help much.
Acquiring: This is found within the Entertainment section of Buy mode.
How it helps: Breaking stone statues can produce Woohooium and Fluorite, both of which can be difficult to find elsewhere.
Recommendation: Obtain this if you do not wish to use the Miner or the Science Tower Thingy.
Acquiring: This is actually one half of the Humble Harvest Stands premium content, and I typically refer to it as Humble Harvest Stand. The Humble Harvest Stands can be bought in the Sims 3 Store, and after that can be found in the Entertainment section of Buy mode.
How it helps: These stands stock nearly every fruit, vegetable, mushroom, and herb in the game. They do not stock Death Flowers, money trees, or the special Gardening opportunity plants. Their selection is random and changes every twenty-four hours, but they remain a decent source of planting material and an easy way to collect nearly every plant in the game.
Recommendation: Make every effort to obtain this.
Acquiring: This is bought in the Sims 3 Store, after which it can be found in the Entertainment section of Buy mode.
How it helps: This allows a sim to conjure a random collectible, in trade for part of their energy motive. Used by an alien, who can quickly recharge that motive, it can be an easy way to obtain collectibles.
Recommendation: There are other, better methods detailed earlier in this section. However, unlike many of those methods, this one requires no investment. It may be worth a player’s time to look into.
Acquiring: This is found under the Entertainment section in Buy mode.
How it helps: When upgraded with a Dimensional Gate, it allows your sim to go on a rabbithole adventure and potentially return with collectibles.
Recommendation: Acquire it if you want it. But it is not essential.
Acquiring: This is found in the Appliances section of Buy mode.
How it helps: It waters plants, and can be upgraded to automatically water plants.
Recommendation: If you can get access to the SwiftGro Gardening Station, avoid this item. Otherwise, use it.
Acquiring: This is purchased from the Sims 3 Store, after which it can be found mixed in with the plants in Buy mode.
How it helps: The Sunflower produces what is quite possibly the best fertilizer in the game, which can be combined with the SwiftGro Gardening Station to really give plants a boost. This can help fill in the collecting journal rapidly.
Recommendation: Make every effort to acquire this.
Acquiring: This is found in the Entertainment section of Buy mode.
How it helps: Aside from being useful for cloning collectibles, as long as they are not too big to fit in the machine, this is the device necessary to collect plasma bugs and forbidden fruit. It makes both of them through experiments. See the University Life guide for more information.
Recommendation: Considering how necessary this is, make every effort to obtain it.
Acquiring: This is a Lifetime Reward and can be obtained for 40,000 lifetime happiness points.
How it helps: This can locate nearly every collectible in the game. It does not locate gnomes.
Recommendation: Make every effort to obtain this.

Plants
Let me start by admitting this: In general, I kinda cheated.
While I could have gone the long road of hunting down every seed, I instead simply purchased the fruit and planted them (with the exceptions of the forbidden fruit, money tree, and the special unlocks). A very large portion of seeds, including all herbs, are available at the local supermarket, which gives one a very big head-start on planting. I also own the Humble Harvest Stands premium content, which I set up where I placed the greenhouse, and simply purchased all of the other fruit at them. The price gouging makes one wince, but the quality of the product is worth it and gives one a very large head start on perfect-quality plants. If this option is available to you, I would suggest you use it.
Common Quality
Acquiring Notes: Tomatoes are extremely, extremely common. There’s a good chance you will find some in your sim’s fridge as a standard item or they will get one in their inventory as soon as they gain their first level in Gardening. And even if your sim doesn’t, these are standard in the Greenhouse venue from the Sims 3 Store, most gardens in worlds, and are incredibly cheap at the local supermarket.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: If you don’t have it as a default, buy it at the local grocery store. The quality boost from having it start out as Nice will help when planting.
Difficulty: One of the easiest plants to find.
How I got it: Bought it at the store.
Acquiring Notes: In general, the apple is less common than the tomato, but can be found in nearly all of the same areas. The exception seems to be community gardens, which generally lack apple trees; this makes them harder to find, though they still are nowhere near difficult.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: If you don’t have it in your fridge and don’t get it when you gain your first skill point in Gardening, buy it at the local grocer.
Difficulty: One of the easiest plants to find.
How I got it: Bought it at the store.
Acquiring Notes: Found in all of the same places as tomatoes. If you have World Adventures, this fruit becomes even more common, as there are many places in France where grapes can be found.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: If you don’t have it in your fridge and don’t get it when you gain your first skill point in Gardening, buy it at the local grocer.
Difficulty: One of the easiest plants to find.
How I got it: Bought it at the store.
Acquiring Notes: The most common vegetable in the game. I have never seen a refrigerator that did not have lettuce in it, it can be found in community gardens frequently and is common in the Greenhouse venue from the Sims 3 Store, and you can buy it cheaply. Plus, like all common seeds, it can spawn when you gain your first rank in the Gardening skill in your sim’s inventory.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Your sim should already have this. If they somehow don’t and it doesn’t spawn in their inventory when they gain a level in Gardening, buy it at the local grocer for the quality bump.
Difficulty: Hands down, the easiest plant in the game to find.
How I got it: Found a set in my fridge.
Acquiring Notes: This type of grape is usually found in France. The general store there sells this type, and it can be found wild in a couple of areas and inside at least one of the tombs. In general, this fruit is not difficult to acquire if you travel.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Buy it from the Humble Harvest Stand, if you own that premium content. It saves you from having to travel all the way to France just to pick up a fruit and the Excellent quality of the fruit allows you a massive head start on getting a perfect version of this plant.
Difficulty: Can be a little difficult to find, due to needing to travel to find it in its native environment.
How I got it: I obtained my first set of Renoit grapes long before the Humble Harvest Stand existed, so I actually traveled to France and bought them there.
Acquiring Notes: This type of grape is usually found in France, in the same places as Renoit Grapes.
How I got it: I obtained my first set of Chermola Blan Grapes long before the Humble Harvest Stand existed, so I actually traveled to France and bought them at the same place as the Renoit.
Acquiring Notes: Like many common seeds, this one can be acquired as a result of gaining one level in the gardening skill. It can also result from any common seed spawner, can be obtained when gaining a level in alchemy, be found in the elixir consignment shop, or found at the Humble Harvest Stand. Unlike many common plants, this one can be difficult to find, as it may not spawn for a few days at any location and may not result from the initial gardening skill increase, though in all tests I have always gotten it from the alchemy skill increase.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Use gaining the first level in alchemy to obtain this plant. Unlike all of the other available methods, that method remains utterly reliable and it has a small range of possible plants you can get anyway.
Difficulty: This should not be difficult to find at all.
How I got it: I was quite surprised when the first level of alchemy came with gifts after I got Supernatural.
Acquiring Notes: After truffles, this is quite possibly the easiest mushroom to get. It can be found in the grocery store, as a result of the first gardening skill increase, the elixir consignment shop, and the Humble Harvest Stand. It also can be extremely common in those locations, meaning you should have no trouble finding it at all.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Buy it at the grocery store.
Difficulty: This is incredibly easy to find.
How I got it: Bought it at the store, primarily out of curiosity.
Acquiring Notes: This one can be surprisingly difficult to find due to randomness if you have not yet invested in alchemy. It can be obtained from the first gardening skill increase, is given with the first increase in alchemy, can be bought at the elixir consignment shop, and is occasionally found at the Humble Harvest Stand. Except for alchemy, where it’s guaranteed you will get this, it can be surprisingly difficult to obtain.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Use the first increase in alchemy to obtain this plant.
Difficulty: This should not be difficult to find at all.
How I got it: It was a surprise gift with the first level of alchemy.
Acquiring Notes: The game’s randomness can also make this one difficult to find, but investing in alchemy guarantees your sim will get it. It can be obtained from the first gardening skill increase, is given with the first increase in alchemy, can be bought at the elixir consignment shop, and is occasionally found at the Humble Harvest Stand.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Use the first increase in alchemy to obtain this plant.
Difficulty: This should not be difficult to find at all.
How I got it: It was a surprise gift with the first level of alchemy.
Acquiring Notes: This mushroom is tied with the Porcinis for ease of obtaining, and found in generally the same places.
How I got it: Bought it at the store once I knew it was connected to alchemy.
Acquiring Notes: The last of the alchemy starter plants; like the others, the game’s randomness can make this hard to find without the guarantee of the alchemy skill.
Acquiring Notes: As with all of the new plants that came with University Life, this can be bought from the Humble Harvest Stand or bought from the grocery store. As with all common plants, this can be given to your sim when they obtain their first level of gardening.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Buy it from the store.

Avornalino Grapes can also be found in other locations across France, with the best source being found after completing some of the quests related to Chateau Landgraab. There’s also a vacation home you can buy that has these.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Buy it from the Humble Harvest Stand.

Recommended Method of Obtaining: Buy it at the store.
Difficulty: Not difficult at all.
How I got it: I bought it at the store.
Note: This is one of only a few plants that, for unknown reasons, have no auto-plant or other spawner in Buydebug.
Acquiring Notes: This can be bought at the Humble Harvest Stand or at the elixir consignment shop. Unlike many of this category, the random nature of both can make acquiring this mushroom extremely difficult, so searching the wild as well should also be a priority.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: Buy it if you can, but if you find it out in the wild first you should go ahead and grab it.
Difficulty: This can be extremely difficult to find, and I have managed to go a couple weeks without ever seeing one.
How I got it: Found my first at the elixir consignment shop and bought it without knowing how lucky I was.
Acquiring Notes: This can be bought at the Humble Harvest Stand or at the elixir consignment shop. How I got it: Bought it from the store.
Note: Do not use a vampire to raise garlic, just in case you forget it’s in their inventory later and have them make a meal… the result for your vampire could be nasty.

Gnomes
In general, the gnomes are slightly easier to collect than others; you can buy every single one of them in Buydebug. As such, I will not list that method, but instead listing the legitimate methods.
Acquiring Notes: Exploring catacombs, sending gems and metals off through the mail to be cut or smelted, using the miner, fishing, transfiguration using the display cases, possible item from the criminal career tract, possible reward for the Investigator profession, or any possibilities I have not listed here that reward one.
Recommended Method of Obtaining: I can’t really recommend a method; if you spend a lot of time collecting, you should be drowning in Mysterious Mr. Gnomes.
Difficulty: No difficulty at all.
How I obtained: I got my first one when I sent a pink diamond off to be cut into a heart-shaped cut. My first pink diamond, and I needed it for a simbot. I do not think I need to repeat what dark things I muttered that day.
