Concept Art – Appaloosa Plains

In the spirit of giving, here’s a fun look at an Appaloosa Plains paint over that was done very early on in the development of #TheSims3 Pets. Our artists take a screenshot of a rough version of the world (usually just some basic terrain with a few roads and buildings laid down), and then literally draw on top of it to give an impression of what the environment will look like when finished to help get everyone working towards the same goal.

“This is My Joystick” Reviews Pets

It seems that after a lifetime of not really bothering with the Sims as a series, with this very piece I’ll have reviewed two of the games in relatively quick succession (with another on the way). The Sims 3: Pets is the latest title out of EA’s stable (fnar fnar!), introducing dogs and cats (and horses, in the PC version) into the plate-spinning life simulator that is the Sims 3.

What separates this Pets edition over the previous expansion from Sims 2, is that you can now control the animals that are in your household; after all, they’re part of the family! Released as an expansion pack on PC, but as its own separate game on other formats, EA have put a lot of marketing power behind this title. Do pets win prizes or is it a big, steaming dog turd?

Everybody needs a friend. For a long time, if you did not have any human friends you could create some Sim friends to play with. But even those friends need friends of their own. And if a dog is man’s best friend, then The Sims 3: Pets is your Sim’s best friend.

This is the third attempt by EA to introduce the idea of pets into a Sims franchise, and their previous efforts have been met with lukewarm receptions. Does it mean it is “third time lucky?”

The Sims 3: Pets is the latest expansion to the evergreen series, and does a lot of things just right. Not only do you get to add pets to your Sims family, but you also get to play as the pets. Pets have different needs to their human owners, but still need a lot of maintenance in order to keep them happy. Of course keeping them happy is, as always, totally optional. Dogs, cats and horses are available as these high maintenance pets, and it is these pets that also provided the most entertainment to my favourite saved family.
