LazyGamer.net Reviews University Life

The first Sims 3 expansion pack of 2013 has arrived. If you played The Sims 2 University, you’ll know more or less what to expect from The Sims 3 University Life. And if you liked that expansion pack, you’ll really love this one. As the name suggests, University Life adds the ability for Sims, young adult and older, to attend university and potentially earn a degree that will give them a bit of an advantage over less educated Sims.

UNI NEW 6

When you first start up your household, a university mascot will bring you a welcome kit. Among other goodies, this kit contains an aptitude test that Sims can complete. It analyses their personality, skills and job experience, and awards credit for appropriate degrees. For instance, an artistic Sim with a high painting skills will receive credits towards a Fine Art degree. They may even earn a scholarship to reduce study fees.

Game Guys Review: The Sims 3 University Life

It seems like the folks at EA just keep coming up with new ideas for expanding their The Sims 3 computer game.  The Sims 3: University Life may not be a fully original idea by the development team (The Sims 2 had a similar expansion), it brings a number of new elements to the aging casual game franchise with mixed results.

As the title rather suggests, University Life opens up the higher education system for younger and older Sims alike.  They’ll not only be able to attend college, but will also earn a degree to give them an edge employment-wise over Sims without a college degree — much like real life (stay in school, kids!).

Seasons’ Aliens & University’s Forbidden Fruit

As noted by Vuneca on official forums, when you have The Sims 3 Seasons & University Expansions installed, the Forbidden Fruit offers a new way to create and add an Alien to your household.

Aliens who “pick” the forbidden fruit have a chance of receiving an “Alien Plant Baby”. This type of PlantSim baby will not acquire the PlantSim occult trait.

Aliens who are successful at picking a Plant Baby will pass on 50% of their DNA bloodline. Any DNA percentage lower than 20%, is no longer considered an Alien in the game, and therefore has no alien powers. Babies who have less than 20% of Alien DNA will acquire the PlantSim powers.

For more information on Aliens, please refer to our Seasons Game Guide

For more information on PlantSims, please refer to our University Game Guide

❗ These are DNA samples from a test I personally conducted, so results will vary in different games

♦ 100% Alien DNA + Forbidden Fruit Baby Pick = 51.8% (+/- 10%) Alien DNA

♦ 50% Alien DNA + Forbidden Fruit Baby Pick = 21.3% (+/- 10%) Alien DNA

♦ 21.3 Alien DNA + Forbidden Fruit Baby Pick = 15.2% (+/- 10%) Alien DNA (No Alien Powers; Is PlantSim)

Game Chronicles Reviews University Life

The Sims 3 may be almost four years old, but the expansion packs are still coming strong. Given that The Sims 2: University is such a fan favorite, I’m a little surprised EA waited until the ninth expansion to release The Sims 3 University Life, but better late than never, right? Anyway, I’ll cut right to the chase, since if you’re reading this review, there’s a good chance you already know all about the base game.

Just as TS2: University did for The Sims 2, University Life introduces college life to the current incarnation of the franchise. I’ll be blunt: you can probably predict your satisfaction with University Life based on how you felt about the first Sims 3 expansion, World Adventures, as sending a Sim to college is similar in many ways to sending them away on a foreign vacation. The college is its own separate locale, and while you’re playing in the college town, only those Sims in college will be playable, and the rest of the household won’t be accessible until the school term is over.
